AU professor charged with fondling student . . .

By Tim Wagner
STAFF WRITER

AURORA — A veteran Aurora University professor — who told police he teaches sexual harassment classes — faces misdemeanor battery charges after allegedly fondling a 22-year-old female student.

Roger David Chambers, 59, a professor in the university's arts and science department, was arrested after the incident, which occurred at 10:30 a.m. Monday in his office on the fourth floor of Eckhart Hall on the university campus, police said. Chambers was released after posting $100 bond.

The student told police she went to Chambers' office to explain why she missed a class. She said Chambers put his hand underneath her shirt and fondled her breast. She pushed his hand away and left his office, the report said.

The victim was crying and appeared frightened while speaking to police, the report said.

Police questioned Chambers, who confirmed the student met with him on Monday. Chambers said the student was upset about missing class and a test.

Police told Chambers the victim's account. Asked if it was true, Chambers said "no," before telling police: "I teach sexual harassment classes."

The victim signed a complaint for battery, and Chambers was arrested. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 2.

Chambers has taught at Aurora University for 28 years. He teaches political science. His current teaching status was not immediately known, said Barbara Wilcox, the university's assistant vice president of communications.

"The trustees, administration, faculty and staff at Aurora University take allegations of misconduct and harassment seriously," Wilcox said.

"We are mindful of the rights and needs of all individuals involved in this situation and will cooperate fully with the Aurora Police Department."

Silver 25th Reunion / $50 fee/person News:

Hello Everyone,

I have just been informed that the cost of the Reunion may be the reason why some of you have decided to NOT attend. (?)

I apologize if I had made it too expensive for you, and I want to extend this offer to everyone . . .

If you are NOT interested in participating in ALL the activities and ONLY want to attend the Saturday EVENING Dinner/Dance
festivities for $50, this offer will be extended to all of you and anyone you pass the word to.

Likewise, if you have paid $75 but do NOT want to attend East High or Gario's or get a T-shirt or have a Reception & $1 drinks prior to the Dinner/Dance - just let me know and I will gladly refund $25 to you. If everyone feels this way, we can completely eliminate the East High
tour and Gario's and the Reception prior to the Dinner/Dance (this was the most expensive thing anyway).

Please let me know! (All feedback will be appreciated!) Remember, this is YOUR Silver 25th Reunion, it won't happen again, and I am doing
this for each and every one of YOU because I really want it to be special and I personally want to see ALL of you attend it.

Anyone wanting to attend ONLY the Dinner/Dance @ 5 p.m. at Jason's @ Gray's Mill in Montgomery (NOT the Reception prior to), please
let me know and I will graciously wait for your fee. I'd appreciate you sending it ASAP though because we have to make final plans and arrangements now.

The $50 fee was initially eliminated because of the cost factor involved with providing for the Reception which everyone was probably going to
attend to, prior to the Dinner/Dance, but if you are willing to ONLY attend the Dinner/Dance and forgo the Reception prior to it - please be my
guest and come to the Dinner/Dance festivities for only $50 (nothing else will be included, however, except a reduced price on the T-shirt).

I look forward to your responses and I hope that this has opened up a new path for more of you to attend!

My apologizes,

Carol Bulas

Subject: Reunion

Hi Carol - After talking this over a lot the last week with ************** , we have decided not to attend the reunion. ********************************************************************************************************************************************
*********************************** To make a long story short, even if we wanted to, there's no way we could participate in the Friday activities. And quite honestly, it doesn't seem fair that we would be charged for activities in which we're not participating (the $75 fee vs. $50 fee). We're not interested in underwriting the costs of activities (high school trip, photos, Gario's, Chicago, etc.) for which we are unable to attend. Hope you understand.

Take care,

No arrests: Disappearance, death of teenager remains unsolved 25 years later

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Mike Cetera

STAFF WRITER

AURORA — On a fall morning more than two decades ago, two men out hunting stumbled across a human skull and other skeletal remains scattered in a swampy field.

The discovery answered the question of where a missing Aurora teenager had gone. But the find generated even more questions, the most important of which remain unanswered today: Who killed Patricia Sue Early and why?

News of the death of the 17-year-old former East Aurora High School student caused as few waves in the community as did her disappearance a year earlier. The girl's mysterious death received little media attention and, while some in her family worried about her well-being, her parents never reported her missing to police.

Early's death officially is classified as undetermined, a ruling issued by a coroner's jury about a month after the discovery of her remains near a set of railroad tracks in Naperville Township. Police suspected foul play, but no charges were filed.

Twenty-five years later, Early's death is an open investigation within the cold case squad of the DuPage County Sheriff's Department. Through a spokesman, the department declined to discuss the facts of the case, acknowledging, however, the office never made an arrest.

Early's death and the questions that surround it still haunt her fraternal twin sister, a Montgomery woman whose phone call helped authorities discover the identity of the remains.

Mary Early said she has lived through two decades of unhappy birthdays and constantly questions what happened and why no one seems to care. She also has her suspicions about who might be responsible.

There are clues — though they eventually could prove false — that police haven't investigated. In an interview, the 42-year-old grandmother said she hasn't told investigators about how her sister's missing ID card was given to her several years ago, or about people in Patricia Early's life who have checkered pasts.

"I just wonder if she was still alive when they dumped her, if she laid in pain for days," Mary Early said, swallowing sobs. "This guy, does he think of her, that he killed her? Does he have a sister that he loves so much? Does he have a mom?"

On July 13, 1979 — the last day anyone admits to seeing Early alive — her family watched as the rebellious teenager entered a car occupied by two Hispanic men. She was headed to a party, according to reports.

Early would never return to her parents' Grove Street house, the place she had moved out of several weeks earlier after an argument with her father, Ernest. Investigators would later question why Early's parents, now deceased, appeared to show such little concern for their daughter's disappearance.

Sometime later, unidentified people returned some of the girl's clothing to the home with the "indication (the teenager) would not be needing them," according to a DuPage County coroner's report.

When the teenager failed to show, some figured she had run away, perhaps to meet up with another friend. Early even left her 3-year-old son in the safety of her grandparents when she got in that car.

But Early's sister said she thought it odd that the girl she shared her blonde-haired good looks with would simply vanish without telling anyone. Mary Early said she asked her parents to call the police and eventually tried to file a missing-person report with the Aurora Police Department, but was turned away because she wasn't an adult.

An Aurora police spokesman confirmed officers never took a report that Early was missing.

The disappearance remained a mystery until Mary Early read a newspaper clipping 15 months later. The story, short on information, described the discovery of the skeleton of a young woman of "slight build."

The details, while sketchy, led several law enforcement agencies to inquire. Was this the body of a young woman who went missing on July 26, 1976, or perhaps a woman who disappeared on Sept. 15, 1978?

In fact, the skeleton was that of Early, but the confirmation wouldn't be made for several days.

A body discovered
The area where Early's remains were found was largely undeveloped at the time of her death. Today it is surrounded by homes and businesses, part of the far East Side of Aurora. Documents associated with the case do not make it clear exactly where the teenager's skeleton was found, nor how it got there. The area is about four miles from her parents' home. On Nov. 8, 1980, two Wheaton men traveled west to the border of Naperville and Aurora to go hunting in a marsh off Liberty Street near the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway tracks. A 23-year-old man discovered a skull in a few inches of water, placed it near the tracks and continued hunting with his 16-year-old companion. The two returned only after they finished hunting, took the skull to their home and called police. When the sheriff's department arrived at the scene, officers soon found other remains in an area described as a runoff from a pond. They would return days later with the Aurora Fire Department, which helped drain some of the water, leading to the discovery of more bones.
A DuPage County evidence technician would later remark, "It's a low spot, swampy area, marsh, most of it is under a couple feet of water."

Authorities would eventually recover two bags full of remains and items associated with the scene. One piece of clothing — a fragment of a bra with a giraffe on it — would convince Mary Early her sister had been found.

Investigators initially had little to work with in their task to learn the identity of the remains. A forensic pathologist brought in to examine the bones concluded they belonged to a young female from a middle-class family.

But then Mary Early called, and soon her sister's dental records were brought to investigators, who confirmed a match on Nov. 18, 1980.

Patricia Early's remains were donated to science.

The investigation
Police concluded Early's death was "unnatural," but the bones discovered by the hunters gave up few clues about how she died. This likely is what led a coroner's jury to rule the death undetermined in December 1980.
Still, investigators believed Early was the victim of foul play. During interviews, they learned about the teenager's rocky family relationship and what happened during the last few weeks of her life.

After leaving home, Patricia Early stayed with friends. A report suggests she was sexually abused during the last weeks of her life.

More than 40 people were interviewed.

A commander with the sheriff's office appeared confidant the case would be solved. "We've got some good leads," he said at the time.

But still no arrests.

And even as the memory of a horrible discovery on an autumn day began to fade, Mary Early waited for justice. She still waits.

Carol,

You probably won’t find any pics of Mary or Pat in the yearbook. They were drop outs if I remember correctly. Well at least they never bothered going to school. I knew these girls from ***********. He dated Pat for years, even up to the last year of her death even though they were more off then on. It’s going to be real hard to prove who killed her, and I do remember hearing theories and such from everybody who hung out around the Early’s.

It was a pretty tough crowd to be around in those days, and I have no idea how I became friends with the Early’s other than just seeing them around *******.

Mary and Pat were definite party girls, and they partied with some bad ass people. People who were in and out of jail, and selling drugs, or doing drugs. I think everyone thought she just ran away from home because she was supposedly being molested. By whom, I have a no idea. I was 16 and very naive, and really didn’t understand what was going on around me.

Carol,

Mary and Patricia went to Waldo middle school and if anyone has an old year book from middle school they are in them.

Don't quote me but I do believe it was Waldo. I went to both Simmons and Waldo and I do remember them. They were identical twins short with blonde hair and blue eyes. And now that I'm talking about them it was Simmons they went to, because we played volleyball and I only went out in seventh grade so it was Simmons so they should be in the Simmon's year book.

Hope I helped you out alittle

Subject: Pat Early

Hi Carol,

Pat Early had a child from Paul Clark. It was Mary who dated Marty. Marty's last name is not Martinez it is Morales. And yes, the other email writer wrote Marty died in a motorcycle accident which is true in fact. Those twin girls were real nice. Yes, they didn't hang around the best of people but still in all they were both good people to those who knew them. I went to grade school with them and remember them from jr. high too. I had visited their home several times and met the parents and brothers and all back in my grade school (Oak Park Elementary) days. They came from a rather large family. They had arguments like any family would have. Mary is the quiet twin, Pat was the more rowdy one. Mary was more petite, Pat was more muscular. It's a tragedy what happened to Pat. I wish for Mary's sake and Pat's child that one day they will resolve her death. I think I still have the actual newpaper article of Pat's death. Sad. Please send my regards to Mary. Hi My name is Laura Perkins (Skokan). I am a good friend of the Early family and was Pat's best friend when she disappeared. I was out of the state at the time of her disappearance. Mary sent this letter you wrote her, to me. We all went to Simmons Jr. High school. I also attended East High but drop out to get my GED and a job. Mary also lost her brother Bill Early a few years ago. Mary and I worked with investigators to try to figure out what happened. They never followed through on any of our suggestions. I just wanted to thank you for posting this on your website. Pat is missed and loved. Thanks again Lori Perkins (Skokan)

War News (updated 6-April-2003):

We are all well aware of the war in Iraq and it is sad to hear about the lives lost. Did you also know that we have alumni who are involved in this crisis outside of the U.S.?

Rolando Guzman (Class of 79) was recently in Zamboanga, Phillipines were they had a Terrorist Cell engage with the local police and their local military last week. I just received his photo this morning.

Kathy Biehl Williams is a Missionary in Davao City, Phillipines where they just had ANOTHER bombing, killing several - after that not too distant bombing at their airport. She says that one of the three mosques hit this time was in her neighborhood and she could hear the machine gun fire at 1:30 a.m..

Debby Mohr Castellese (West High Class of 81) has a son, Brant Bonifas - who is the cousin of Mary Bonifas Rice (Aurora Catholic Central Class of 81). He is serving on the front lines in Iraq as a Marine.

Let's keep them in our prayers and thoughts and pray for their safe return back home soon!

New Alumni Directory being published by Harrison Publishing: If you would like to submit your updated information for the directory that EAHS has directed Harrison Publishing to put together for ALL classes since 1939 or so to current, please call their toll-free number 1-800-810-0109. They are also taking orders now for the directory which won't be available for quite some time. $69.95 for leather cover and $59.95 for the soft-bound. No CD or electronic version will be available. Even if you don't buy the book, you may want someone to be able to contact you?
